Double Doors – The Mystery of Saving Faith - Monday June 1st

So Jesus said to them again, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep .... I am the door; if anyone enters through Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. John 10:7-9

Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come into him and will dine with him, and he with Me. Rev. 3:20

But as many as "received Him", to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who "believe in His name." John 1:12

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

This week we conclude our series on "Doors." In our consideration of "Doors" over the past four weeks, we have primarily looked at "Doors" in terms of God leading us as his children so that his will is lived out in our lives. Being "led by God" in terms of his will for our lives presumes a "relationship with God." This week we take a step back, so to speak, and consider "Doors" that establish us in a "relationship with God."

The Bible makes it clear that we are like sheep, that we have wandered away from God, that we need to be brought back to a relationship with God, that Jesus was sent to bring us back, and that Jesus is the "Door" through which we enter in order to come back into the "fold" of God (restored to God). Jesus died for the rebellion of our sin and wandering away from God. Christ is the "Door" of salvation for us and when we enter through him, we are saved. Faith is the means by which we enter "into Christ" who is the "Door" of salvation. But "saving faith" involves another "Door" that is all important.

It is a bit mysterious, but somehow being able to enter the "Door" of Salvation, which is Christ, requires that we open the "Door" of our inner being to Christ. Saving faith places "you in Christ" and "Christ in you."

We see both of these "Doors" in our John passage. You become God's child (restored to God) by believing in His name (you in Christ when you enter into Christ who is the "Door" of salvation) and by receiving him (Christ in you by opening the door of your heart to him so he can dwell within you in the fellowship of intimacy). So these two "Doors" establish you in a "relationship with God" through a saving faith that places "you in Christ" and "Christ in you." Throughout the week will be looking at the process God takes a person through so that they truly come to saving faith. We will do this through the story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch in Acts chapter 8.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Thank you, Jesus, for being the door of salvation that restores us to God. Thank you for knocking on the door of my inner being and calling me to open myself to you and the gift of salvation you purchased for me through the sacrifice of yourself on the cross. I know fully well that it is only through your intervention that the price of redemption was paid and that I was moved to respond to you and your wondrous gift of grace. Amen!
