After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it.So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows. 1 Timothy 6:7-10
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
The fact that the world we live in is a materialistic world is undeniable. All of us struggle with being materialistic. We do need money (wealth) to live life here on earth but it has a way becoming a predominate thing for us. Perhaps this is why Jesus, when he gave us the “Lord’s Prayer,” included the petition: “Your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” When God set things in motion here on earth with mankind as the centerpiece, he had in mind a perfect blend between heaven and earth (materialistic and non-materialistic). But mankind did not get with the program and went astray.
Jesus came to fit us for heaven. Heaven is not a materialistic place at all and we are going to spend all eternity there. Today’s Scripture reminds that there wasn’t anything materialistic about us when we came into this world and there won’t be anything materialistic about us when we leave either. Keeping eternity (heaven) in view can help a lot with seeing the petition above from the Lord’s Prayer realized in our own lives. Jesus came to save us from many things and high on the list is materialism.
Make no mistake, money is not evil. It is the love of money that connects us to evil. The love of money keeps us from being content (the right blend between heaven and earth; between being materialistic and non-materialistic) and our passage clearly shows the downward spiral this leads to. Our “true faith” in Christ should lead to an upward spiral toward heaven. When we wander away, materialism pierces our lives with many sorrows.
We can all relate to this because we have all experienced the pain of such sorrow. Life on earth is a training ground for heaven and we need to get with the program. What relief and rest comes to us from the pressure and tension of money when we are turn to our Heavenly Father and fully entrust to him all our desires and concerns in regard to money.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, your kingdom come, your will be done in my life in ways that correspond with the glories of heaven throughout my time here on earth. Make me so heavenly minded that I am of great earthly good in the advancement of your kingdom and will here on earth. I choose to forsake all that is “downward” and embrace all that is “upward”. Fill me with your presence and power for the journey ahead. Amen!
