Fruits of the Holy Spirit (Kindness) – A Heart Made Like God’s - Saturday, May 18th
Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:32 (NASB)
Today's thoughts from today's verse:
God is kind to us, we are kind to others. However, God alone is kind and apart from him we are not. It is the quality of kindness that belongs to God that he manifests in us so that kindness can be extended by us to other people. We have pointed out an important understanding before and that is the fact that spiritual fruits are the fruits of the Holy Spirit and not the fruits of us. The fact that kindness is a quality of God and not of us helps us to see why this understanding is true and why this work of the Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary.
Our passage also talks about forgiveness but we already explored the relationship between forgiveness and kindness earlier in the week. Our passage does mention something else that is very important. Kindness is vitally connected to having a tender heart. Earlier in the week we said that kindness is caring. We need a tender heart in order to care. If we truly care for other people we will be kind to them. If we are not kind to people it is because we do not care and if we do not care it means our hearts have become hardened toward other people and their needs.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, I know you are kind and that you extend kindness to me all the time. I know it is because you care for me and have a tender heart toward me. Forgive me for my lack of not being in tune with you and how you relate to me in these ways. Please help me to turn my heart more fully toward you today and in the days ahead. Help me to experience your kindness, care, and tender-heartedness more fully as I increasingly become one who knows you and experiences you consistently on a daily basis. Amen!
