Fruits of the Holy Spirit (Kindness) – Caring for Others as God Cares for Us - Thursday, May 16th
He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 (NASB)
Today's thoughts from today's verse:
So far, in our considerations of the fruit of the Spirit, we have covered love, peace, joy, and patience. Today we turn our attention to kindness. Kindness is caring. Of course, we are talking about caring for others and not about caring for ourselves. Caring for ourselves is easy compared to caring for other people. Caring for and looking out for ourselves comes naturally, while caring for and watching out for others is, in a very real sense, unnatural. Have you noticed how some of the Scripture passages we have considered in our series focus on the need for humility when it comes to Spiritual fruit? Today's passage talks about walking humbly with God. Living life as it was meant to be or should we say, "living fully," flows out of our humble walk with God.
Our passage also talks about our need "to love kindness." Kindness is a significant part of "living fully" for God. Like all spiritual fruit, "kindness" begins in our own relationship with God. Titus chapter 3 says, "When the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared, He saved us." A little later in the chapter its says that those who have believed in God, must "be careful to engage in good deeds." Engaging in "good deeds" is another way of speaking of caring for others. Caring for others is what kindness is all about. Kindness to others on our part is made possible because we have the humility that leads to a genuine "walking with God" kind of life. Our walk with God begins with God's "redemptive" kindness and continues on a daily basis as we experience his "relational" kindness over and over again. Kindness towards other people is the overflow of God's kindness toward us.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, I recognize the reality that if I am not kind to others it is because my awareness of your kindness toward me is lacking. My request today is that you would significantly change this in my life today. Flood my heart and life with an awareness of your presence and the amazing kindness and care you have for me. Transform me into someone who is truly a recipient of your kindness and someone who is truly an agent of kindness toward others. Amen!
