Fruits of the Holy Spirit (Self-control) – A Lifetime of Steady Growth Toward Christ Likeness - Saturday, June 1st

For even though I am absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good discipline and the stability of your faith in Christ. Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. Colossians 2:5-7

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

The Apostle Paul saying of his readers that he rejoices to see their good discipline and the stability of their faith in Christ, fits in nicely with our saying earlier that self-control is steadiness. A godly, fruitful life is all about "sticking with" (steadiness) our faith in Christ. Just as we trusted Christ to save us, we trust him to sanctify us. We received Christ by faith and we walk with him by faith. Redemption firmly roots us in Christ and leads to our being built up in him and established in our faith. All of this is saying that God started a work in us and he expects it to continue on until his investment in us yields the fruit of a godly, righteous life.

If we haven’t understood this teaching like we should up to now, it is important that we leave this series believing that we have truly received the instruction that we have needed. We must be overflowing with gratitude to God for his Divine diligence of calling us into the fullness of the life he has for us. The life he has for us is a life of "living fully" for him. And of course a life lived fully for him is a life that abundantly yields the fruit of the Spirit on a daily basis.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, I am grateful for the steady way you work with me. Thank you for sticking with me and never giving up on me. I believe in what you are teaching me about the Christian life through this series. I commit myself to you and your plan for me. Lord, more than anything else, I want my life to be the fruitful life you desire it to be and that you alone, through the working of the Holy Spirit, can bring about. Amen!
