He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. Colossians 1:18
Today's thoughts from today's verse:
Today's passage has three parts, but we will begin with the middle part. We are told that Jesus Christ is "the beginning, the firstborn from the dead." We live in a fallen world where each of us apart from Divine intervention lives our lives without God. A life without God is a pseudo-life, a dead life. When we receive Jesus Christ, God's gift to us, we are delivered from death and brought back to life. Jesus is the beginning of all this. Jesus went into "death" and came back from it through his resurrection on behalf of all mankind. He became the firstborn from the dead so that we, being born from the dead, might be restored to life with God, which is life indeed.
Next comes the first part of today's passage where we are told that Jesus Christ "is also head of the body, the church." All those who follow Jesus Christ in being "born from the dead," are joined together in the Body of Christ. The body of Christ is the church and he is head over it. There are "churches" everywhere and they correspond to the true church in varying degrees. The true church is simply the union of all true followers of Christ who make up the "spiritual entity" called the body of Christ through which Christ manifests himself here on earth. So, when we receive Jesus Christ, God's gift to us, we are joined to Christ and to true believers everywhere. Joining with others who profess faith in Christ in local "churches" gives us the opportunity to experience Christ's presence collectively as he seeks to be (actually function) the Head of his body, the church.
The last part of today's passage tells us that the goal of all of this is "that He Himself will come to have first place in everything." In reality, receiving Jesus Christ, God's gift to us, was meant to be a "gift exchange" moment. Jesus Christ is given to us so that he will have first place in our lives. Jesus Christ having first place in our lives requires that we give ourselves back to him as a gift. When we do this on an individual basis, he becomes the actual head (first place) of our lives and when we do this collectively with others followers, he becomes the actual head (first place) of his church.
What an amazing gift Jesus Christ is to us and what an incredible opportunity to be able to help others receive the indescribable gift of Jesus Christ at Christmas time. So, we receive the gift of Jesus Christ, our Savior; we give ourselves in surrender to Jesus Christ, our Head; and He guides us in conjunction with the Body of Christ to bring the indescribable gift of Jesus Christ to world we live in. What an amazing plan God has for reaching the world and what an wonderful thing it is to be a part of it.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, thank you for the gift you are to me. I know that you brought me back to life in order for me to experience true life with you and others of like precious faith. More than ever before may you have first place in my life and with those I share life with in the Body of Christ. You are truly Savior and Lord! May you use your church in mighty ways to share the gift of Jesus Christ with people everywhere. Amen!
