"God's Guidance and the Holy Spirit" - Wednesday, September 7th
But just as it is written, “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him.” For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God. 1 Corinthians 2:9-12
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
The concluding words of today’s Scripture speak of the “spirit of the world” and the “Spirit who is from God.” Because we have received God’s Spirit, the “spirit of the world” should be history for us. But we live in the world and it exerts a powerful influence on us. Life in the world includes a tremendous amount of uncertainty. If the desire for and the pursuit of making the “uncertain” certain are strong in our lives, we can be sure the “spirit of the world” is strong in us. We think if we can just nail down all the “uncertainties” of life, we will be all set. This really is the “spirit of the world” at work. So much of our time, our energy, our effort, our resources, etc. are spent on the endless task of trying to make the “uncertain” certain.
We are talking about God’s guidance this week. When making the “uncertain” certain is a driving force in our lives, a very wrong dynamic will be a work as we seek God’s guidance in our lives. We will not be able to see much beyond God guiding us into whatever will make our lives more certain. This is not what walking by the Spirit of God is all about. Walking by the Spirit is an amazing adventure of faith. Walking in the spirit of always trying to nail down “uncertainty” and always trying to move the hand of God to assist us, is torturous. Notice the opening words of our passage, “Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him.”
When God’s guidance is all about his leading us into “all that He has prepared for us,” it is a whole different ballgame. But, it requires that we walk in step with the “Spirit.” Our transformation is the need of the moment. We must trust God to root out the “spirit of the world” in our lives so that we get to the spot where we leave the “uncertainties” with him. We must trust him to show us how to walk by the “Spirit.” We are told in our passage that “the things God has prepared for us are revealed by the Spirit.” We are also told that “we have received the Spirit who is from God so that we may know the things freely given to us by God.” Once we are in tune with God’s Spirit and are walking in step with Him, we will be guided into the fullness of what he has prepared for us and freely given to us.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, I get it. You are my certainty. Deliver me from the spirit of the world. Teach me to walk by the Spirit. Change me in wonderful ways and unfold the amazing life you have for me. I know you are sufficient and that life with you in the face of all uncertainty is sufficient for me. Help me to live fully for you and to glorify your name forever. Amen!
