God’s Kingdom Mission – Full Confidence in His Work - Friday, April 20th

Then Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let one of them escape.” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and slew them there. Now Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of the roar of a heavy shower.” So Ahab went up to eat and drink. But Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; and he crouched down on the earth and put his face between his knees. He said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.” So he went up and looked and said, “There is nothing.” And he said, “Go back” seven times. It came about at the seventh time, that he said, “Behold, a cloud as small as a man’s hand is coming up from the sea.” And he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot and go down, so that the heavy shower does not stop you.’” In a little while the sky grew black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy shower. And Ahab rode and went to Jezreel. Then the hand of the Lord was on Elijah, and he girded up his loins and outran Ahab to Jezreel. 1 Kings 18:40-46

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

In today’s passage, God, who withheld rain from Israel for close to three years, causes it to rain once again. This period with the absence of rain marks a significant campaign in the overall mission of God. It was designed to turn back hearts in Israel. We saw yesterday that the people of Israel did turn back to the Lord. However, if you read on in 1 Kings, you will see that Ahab’s heart was not turned back through all of this. Rather, his opposition to God and Elijah intensifies. One of the most significant things to come from this campaign of God’s kingdom mission is the elimination of all the prophets of Baal. So, God has been at work accomplishing his good purposes and now it is raining again in Israel.

At the outset of this week we expressed our hope that as a result of our considerations we would find the encouragement we need to live our lives in full confidence that God is at work today accomplishing exactly what we need for our good, the advancement of his kingdom, and his glory. It is hoped that you are learning to embrace each “dry season” God brings your way for they often hold more significance for you than the “rain” that follows. Far too often, we get so caught up in longing for the “rain” and wanting the “dry season” to cease, that we miss what God is doing. It is only when we experience the full benefit of the “dry season” that we will know the full blessing of the “rain” God bestows on us afterwards.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, it really is all about you. You really do know what you're doing and you can be absolutely trusted. It is not about me and yet far too often, unfortunately, I put myself and what I want at the center of things. Forgive me for doing this because I know when this happens I relegate you to role of serving me instead of me serving you. “Our Father Who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Amen!
