Great Expectations & Confidence
I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always offering prayer with joy in my every prayer for you all, in view of your participation in the gospel from the first day until now. For I am confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:3-6
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
The gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ came to purchase salvation for people everywhere. God’s great expectation is for people to believe the good news that salvation in Christ is available and then by faith receive him into their hearts and lives. As recipients of Christ’s provision of salvation he redeems them from slavery to sin and launches them into a life of righteous transformation by his powerful presence through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. God’s great expectation for people includes the strategic plan that those who become recipients of the gospel also become agents of the gospel.
In today’s Scripture, the Apostle Paul refers to the Philippian believers as participants in the gospel. In doing so he is focusing on how their being ones who receive the gospel is vitally linked to their being ones who share the gospel with others. The Apostle Paul says that he gives thanks to God that from the first day when they became recipients of the gospel until now they have also been agents of the gospel. God’s great expectation is that all his people will be both recipients of the gospel and agents of the gospel right from the start. Paul calls this a good work of God. He then makes a very bold declaration. He says he is confident that this good work of God will continue all the way through to the day of Christ (the second coming of Christ). Paul is confident that the good work of God will continue in their lives because it is just that – a good work of God.
We too can be confident that God will continue his good work in us. By grace he redeemed us in Christ. By grace Christ is transforming our lives. By grace we share Christ with those who are blessed by the changed life they see and experience in their relationship with us. It is a good work that we can count on God to accomplish in our life day after day. So often in our lives, things change or don’t work out. We are disappointed, discouraged, disillusioned, and anything but confident. But remember, we are talking about good news and the good work of God. Step out in faith and be confident that the great expectations God has for you as both recipient and agent of the gospel will be realized day after day because it is a good work he is doing in you and through you.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, I understand that you bestowed on me the gift of salvation so that you could come into my heart and life and bring forth from my life all that you desire and intend. Forgive me for my lack of confidence that this will really be what happens with my life. I acknowledge how prone I am to get wrapped up in myself and have expectations that are no greater than my own capacity. I choose to believe in the unlimited capacity you have to accomplish your good work in me. I choose to be confident that your great expectations for me as good news recipient and agent will be realized in my life everyday going forward. Amen!
