"Great Expectations & Perspective" - Friday, June 1st
Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:8-9
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
When God’s people have a willing and cooperative spirit, the great expectations he has for them will be realized fully. Making sure God’s expectations remain our expectations makes all the difference. Unfortunately, it is easy for us to slip into a duplicity of mind and spirit where we deceive ourselves into thinking our expectations are in alignment with God’s expectations when they are not. We become experts at double talking ourselves, others, and even God. We tout our willing and cooperative spirit and our prowess for living fully for God while harboring expectations for ourselves that result in attitudes and behaviors that run counter to what God has for us.
Today’s Scripture gives us a benchmark to measure ourselves against so that we can discern the hidden perspectives of mind and heart that mess up the works. We need to see clearly what there is that goes on inside of us that isn’t aligned with God and his ways. Our passage says whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, excellent, and worthy of praise, dwell on these things. What do you “dwell” on? How much of what goes on inside of you is different than these things? How much do you dwell on these things? Ordering your inner world in ways that align you with these genuinely spiritual things is the key to having an actual willing and cooperative spirit. This is the pathway of living fully for God and having God’s great expectations thoroughly realized in our lives.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, I know I need to dwell on that which is truly spiritual so that I really do have a godly perspective. Please fill my inner world with that which is truly spiritual and cast out all the hidden things that need to go. I want to be aligned fully with you and your desires for me. I embrace the journey of walking with you with a cooperative and willing spirit. Your will be done. Amen!
