Jesus Christ, the One and Only – Makes a Radical Difference - Monday, September 30th

Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Ephesians 4:1-7

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

We live in an amazing time in history in regard to faith and the role it has in society. In our culture there is an outcry for religious tolerance that has escalated it seems more than ever before. But the amazing part is not so much the emphasis on everyone believing whatever they want, but rather the emphasis on multiple faith systems each being true at the same time. It is one thing to push for acceptance between peoples of all religious paths in order to promote a peaceful coexistence between them; it is a very different thing to promote the idea that there can be more than one “correct” or “true” religious path with all such paths being equally valid and leading to the same end. Our passage above is quite clear: there is “one” God and “one” faith (and all that goes with it)

If I asked a group of people to write a description of Napoleon for me and I ended up with a set of descriptions that varied widely from each other, it would be fine to promote tolerance and acceptance of each other’s descriptions but it would be absurd to promote the notion that each description is equally “correct” or “true” or “valid.” Even if the historical record on Napoleon were flawed and there was great difficulty discerning between fact or fiction, still Napoleon “was who he was” and everyone’s description of him is only valid to the degree that it corresponds to who he actually was (even if we are stuck with being agnostic about it).

When it comes to God and one’s personal faith in Him, it is essential to focus on the reality that “God is who He is” and, if a person holds to a description of God that differs, it will not change the reality of who He is. Remember our passage above: “one” faith and “one” God. The major religions of the world hold some commonality with Christianity in regard to their descriptions of God, but the differences at essential points produce a description of God that is not the God of Biblical Christianity that the Judeo-Christian Scriptures describe for us. The Judeo-Christian Scriptures are accurate and not flawed and give to us a totally reliable description of God (a study for another day) that wonderfully corresponds to the “God is who He is” version of Him that we have been speaking of. “God is who He is” and when we see Him for who He is we will see Jesus Christ. An examination of Jesus Christ, all that He accomplished for mankind, and why He accomplished what He did, will help us see how Christianity is radically different from every other faith system and will serve to alleviate our doubts and stabilize our faith. This is the focus of this week’s Devotionals.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, how amazing and special it is that I have become a beneficiary of the radical difference you came to make. You are who you are and that of course is the God of Scripture. Thank you Jesus for reassuring me and strengthening my faith in you and in you alone. I believe in you with all my heart and soul. Amen!
