I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Romans 7:22-24
Therefore, my brethren, you also were made to die to the Law through the body of Christ, so that you might be joined to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit for God. For while we were in the flesh, the sinful passions, which were aroused by the Law, were at work in the members of our body to bear fruit for death. But now we have been released from the Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter. Romans 7:4-6
For what the Law could not do, weak as it was through the flesh, God did: sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, so that the requirement of the Law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:3-4
For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. Romans 10:3-4
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
In essence the law reveals a pattern that outlines right and wrong living. If we set out to live according to this pattern so that we try to do the right and not do the wrong, and we are truly honest and objective, we will come to the spot where we say we are unable to fulfill the law. Then the work of the Old Covenant (the law of God) as a pattern will have done the work it was meant to do. We will realize that it must be death to self-empowered living and Amen to the New Covenant which is God’s Spirit in us (by means of the blood of the New Covenant – that cleanses us and makes us a fit residence for the indwelling Holy Spirit) to produce that which we cannot do on our own – living right and not wrong in full harmony with the law of God.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, while there are times I just coast, there many times I work hard at life. I realize that working hard to succeed spiritually doesn’t serve me well when it is rooted in my own self effort. However, I am beginning to grasp that living by means of your Spirit doesn’t eliminate effort on my part. It just means that the living I do is rooted in your powerful presence and enablement. Lord, help me to depend on you completely as I give myself fully to living life right and not wrong. I reject self effort and striving in favor of resting in your power and strength. Amen!
