Maximum Love – A Motivation to Humble Service - Friday, June 1st
Therefore if there is any encouragement in Christ, if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, maintaining the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose. Philippians 2:1-2
Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor; not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality. Romans 12:9-13
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
There is not a shred of evidence in our story that would suggest there was anything self-serving in what the four men were doing for their friend. It is clear that the pure and simple motive of love and compassion for their friend was the sole basis for their actions in the story. It is our love for God that should motivate us to serve Him and it is our love for others that should motivate us to serve them. Here is another co-reality: the more we love and serve God, the more we will love and serve others. The more we love and serve others, the more we will love and serve God. Our love all the way around must be genuine and full. Maximum love through a life of service is what it’s all about. There is no room for hypocrisy in the work of God’s kingdom.
Seeing ourselves accurately is no small task. It is hard to really see what makes us tick; what it is that really prevails in our lives. It is not a matter of what we think should prevail or what we want to prevail, but what does prevail. If we are truly putting God’s kingdom first then our love for Him and our love for others is prevailing in our lives. A commitment to humbly serving God and others with genuine love is the call of the moment and we must respond.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, help me to see accurately what it is that makes me tick. I really do want the central motivation of my life to be the pursuit of loving you and other people through serving. Move in me by your Spirit so that I am able to face and embrace whatever changes you reveal that need to be made. Empower me to become one in whom your love is truly maximized. I want to be the real deal for your honor and glory. Amen!
