How great is Your goodness, which You have stored up for those who fear You, which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You, before the sons of men! You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues. Blessed be the Lord. Psalm 31:19-21A
We move on this week to goodness and faithfulness in our list of the fruits of the Spirit from Galatians 5:22-23. We will focus on goodness first. Goodness is excellence. Today's Psalm speaks of God's goodness. The goodness of God refers to the excellent way he acts on behalf of those who are under his rule and care. Those who are under God's rule and care are described in our Psalm as ones who fear God and take refuge in him. For such ones God has a great amount of goodness that he stores up and dispenses on their behalf.
Our Psalm talks about the excellent way God bestows his goodness as he helps his people with the evil (in contrast to good) they come up against in their lives. God helps by providing shelter for his people in the secret place of his presence. It is here that those who are his are hidden and kept above the impact of evil people, evil settings, and evil treatment. As we go forward in our week, we will see more completely how this work of God's goodness for his people leads to his people having the fruit of goodness.
Blessed be the Lord! You are so good to me, Lord. Thank you for your goodness and the excellent way you are at work connecting my life with good and disconnecting it from evil. Show me how to become one who really experiences the goodness of your presence in the midst of the tough stuff of life. Amen!
