"Our Protection From Times Of Distress" - Friday, June 10th

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! Let your persevering spirit be evident to all. The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard (protect) your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

God offers us protection from times of distress and yet times of distress come to all of us. This is because the protection he offers is not about keeping us from experiencing times of distress but rather about keeping us from the negative impact of the times of distress we experience. This is what today’s Scripture is all about. Notice that the passage concludes by saying that our hearts and minds will be guarded(protected). Times of distress may mess up our lives but they don’t have to mess up our hearts and minds. God wants to keep the impact of times of distress from impacting our hearts and minds.

But we have a choice to make: We can get caught up in that which is distressful and let anxiety become full blown in our hearts and minds or we can turn to God for protection. We turn to God for protection by bringing ourselves and our need for help with anxiety to God in earnest prayer. God delights to replace our anxiety with his supernatural peace. When we are filled with his supernatural peace our hearts and minds are guarded (protected) in Christ Jesus. We may still be in the middle of the distressful time but the distressful time will not be in the middle of us. We may have to come to him over and over in this way, but remember he never tires of guarding our hearts and minds through his supernatural peace.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, I know you are near and yet so often the distressful things I experience seem nearer. I want to be able to persevere through times of distress by becoming one who knows your presence in the middle of them and experiences the protection of your supernatural peace as it sweeps through my heart and mind over and over again. I know that as this becomes the pattern of my life, I will become one who rejoices over and over again as well. Amen!
