Passing Our Faith to the Next Generation - Faithfulness Over Success - Wednesday, June 21st

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus according to the commandment of God our Savior, and of Christ Jesus, who is our hope, to Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord …. This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. 1 Timothy 1:1-2, 18-19

But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith …. In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following …. Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. It is a trustworthy statement deserving full acceptance. For it is for this we labor and strive, because we have fixed our hope on the living God, who is the Savior of all men, especially of believers. Prescribe and teach these things. Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. 1 Timothy 4:1A, 6, 7B-12

But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But flee from these things, you man of God, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith; take hold of the eternal life to which you were called, and you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:6-12

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life in Christ Jesus, to Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day, longing to see you, even as I recall your tears, so that I may be filled with joy. For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. For this reason I remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. 2 Timothy 1:1-7

You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also. 2 Timothy 2:1-2

Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted. But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. You, however, continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:12-17

Make every effort to come to me soon; for Demas, having loved this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia, Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Pick up Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for service …. The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you. 2 Timothy 4:9-11, 22

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

It wouldn’t hurt to read again the Scriptures above and observe carefully the relationship of Paul and Timothy. This is a wonderful account of someone from the older generation blessing someone from the younger generation through an all out effort to build good things into their life. You can be sure that the mentoring relationship of Paul to Timothy was one filled with both showing and telling. Timothy did not just hear about knowing and serving God, he saw the reality of Paul’s faith displayed through a love relationship with God that was lived out day by day through both devotion and service to God. It is interesting that Timothy is the young person Paul enlists for reconnecting John Mark to himself and his ministry. It is also interesting to note that while Timothy and John Mark are mentoring success stories, Demas reminds us that things don’t always work out the way we would like. Our job is to faithfully live out our faith before others (succeeding generations) and teach and train them as well, regardless of outcome.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, help me to be faithful in my devotion to you; help me to faithfully serve others; and help me to faithfully bless the next generation in every way possible. Show me how to be more engaged in spiritually beneficial ways with the young people who are already in my life. Open me up to additional young people that could use a touch from my life for the journey of faith they are on. I really want to be faithful regardless of the outcome. Amen!
