Redemption & Relief – Christ’s Example - Tuesday, November 15th

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come. Luke 4:18-19

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” Matthew 9:35-38

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

We have established that Missions is all about joining God in his two-fold mission of compassion for the world. This means then that Missions brings the Gospel message of redemption to the world, but it also involves caring deeply about the significant pain and suffering that exists in our world and taking helpful steps toward alleviating it. To gain the solid understanding of what it means to join God in these ways we need to look more closely at what God has brought about to make our joining him a possibility. At the very center of God's two-fold mission of compassion for the world is his beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

When Jesus was here on earth, he cared deeply for the needs of people on every level. Through his healing ministry he did a great deal to alleviate the significant pain and suffering of people. Through his teaching ministry he taught about life as it was meant to be here on earth and how his kingdom was all about getting it right. Through his sacrificial ministry he paid the price of sin and opened the doors of his kingdom to everyone who is willing to respond to him in child-like faith. Christ calls all who enter the doors of his kingdom to join him in being co-workers with him and each other in his two-fold mission of bringing the Gospel message of redemption to the world, while caring deeply about the significant pain and suffering that exists in our world and taking helpful steps toward alleviating it.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, continue to develop in me the compassion needed for my full participation in the two-fold mission of touching my neighbors both near and far with your love and provision on every level of human need. I love you, Lord, and I bless your Holy Name today. Amen!

Health & Child Development

Many diseases are fully preventable and treatable. But prevention and treatment must be accessible to each person. World Relief’s health and child development programs work to ensure this happens. Our programs holistically address the health and well being needs of adults and children.

(This is the second of the five emphases of “World Relief.” May it guide you in prayer and giving as you further join God in whatever response he is calling you to. There is not necessarily a correspondence between the “World Relief” emphasis and the Devotional theme for today.)
