Responding To Distress – Captured by the Transforming Grace of God - Thursday, July 12th
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; Fear the Lord and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones. Proverbs 3:5-8
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
Several years ago there was a movie out based on the story of Louis Zamperini. In the actual story of his life, there is one part of the account of his conversion and transformation that goes very well with our emphasis this week and today’s Scripture. We are told that, essentially, he was so overwhelmed by the grace and love of God that his hate, hurts, and entrenched habits could not stay because they could not co-exist with the grace and love that flooded his heart and life. The insight this brings must not escape us. Are we so overwhelmed by the grace and love of God that there is not room for these kind of things in our hearts and lives? If our hate, hurts, and entrenched habits hang on year after year, it is because there is room for them in our hearts and life because we have not been filled - and overwhelmed - with the grace and love of God.
This kind of change is essential for countering and overcoming the distressing things in our lives. When we are changed by the grace of God, freed from sin, self-determination, and self-reliance, and put on the straight paths of living fully for God, God enables us to face victoriously the distresses that come our way.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, we confess that we have gone our own way and done our thing. Our independence, self-reliance, and the presence of bad things in our lives, has kept us so spiritually incomplete. And so we also confess that our experience with your presence and love is incomplete because we choose self, our own paths, and bad things over you and your love. We cry out to you Lord to wash over our being with your presence and love to such an extent that it becomes impossible for the bad things in our lives to stay, for us to desire our own paths, and for self to be in charge. We trust you for this miracle of love and grace in our lives, Lord God. Amen!
