But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love. Ephesians 4:15-16
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
We have been talking about tracking well with God and the kingdom purposes he has for us. Regular involvement with others who are on the same journey where the primary focus is the exchange of ongoing mutual support and accountability is absolutely essential. However, the goal is not merely to keep from going off track, it is to track well and go forward with a full head of steam into the fullness of what God has for us. The fullness of what God has in store for us is a journey experienced in community with a set of fellow travelers. Yes, we have our own relationship with Christ and yes, there is an individual aspect involved with today’s Scripture which says, “we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ.” But it is inescapable that our passage is stressing how we grow up together into Christ our head.
We said yesterday that being a part of a small group gives us the opportunity to surround ourselves with others who encourage, challenge, uplift, inspire, and celebrate the work of God in our hearts and lives. Today’s passage is a beautiful description of how that happens fully. If you are part of a small group, think about your small group as you read the description again: “We are to grow up into all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.”
This is a vital part of how the advancement of God’s kingdom works. Meeting with others who seek to grow up together into Christ, who look to him as their head and expect him to blend them together in just the right ways, who depend on him to orchestrate their involvement together with each other so that the contributions of the individuals in group wonderfully benefit the whole group. When we are growing together with a special set of fellow travelers, our own relationship with Christ will blossom and we will become one whose life impacts the world around us in amazing ways.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, I realize I cannot go it alone. Help me connect with a set of fellow travelers in the ways you have in mind. I am committed to growing together with others of like precious faith and I look forward to tracking well with a set of special people who go forward with a full head of steam into the fullness of what you have in store for them. Lord, Your kingdom come, Your will be done. Amen!
