Deep Six Study and Daily Devotional

Every preacher's dream is to see the truth he preaches lived out in the lives of those he preaches to and certainly this is as it should be. This dream is rooted in our Heavenly Father's desire that there would never be unlived truth in the lives of His people. Our church is dedicated to the purpose of helping people Live Fully, and one way we do that is to encourage a deeper study of the truth they hear on Sundays throughout the other six days of the week.  Accordingly, each week we provide (1) the Deep Six Study and (2) the Daily Devotional.

(1) Deep Six Study - accessed via "Discussion Notes" button located under the video message on the "Watch" page of the website. Printed copies also available at the Connect Desk in the church lobby. Note: the Deep Six Study is being done by Tom Main and will be posted below.

(2) Daily Devotional - The Devotionals are done by Ken Hart and are available online Monday through Saturday on a daily basis at or the "Daily Devotional" button at the bottom of the "Home" page. The devotions build on and expand from the Sunday message. It is our desire, our hope, and our prayer for this devotional section to be a useful Spiritual Life tool that our church family can benefit from throughout the year. Each day's devotional will typically consist of Scripture connected with the message, a commentary, and a prayer response. We trust the Daily Devotional will assist you as you seek to live out the truth of God's word on a daily basis.

The World, our Neighbor – “Refuge of Grace”

Introduction – (Note: As this document is available on the internet, some details omitted to protect our missionaries)

 When crisis/war/disaster strike and most people have the instinct to run away (or turn away),
there are those who choose instead to run in – to help, and to spread the Gospel.

 Our guest speaker, Ken, is just such a person. He and his wife are missionaries to Displaced
Peoples in refugee areas among those fleeing from war and persecution.
Guest’s Remarks – (Matthew 9:35-38)

 Called to work with local churches in [unnamed country] among thousands of refugees from
nearby war. 80% of those refugees are women and children.

 Projects include protecting families from oncoming winter, “Project 99” ( )
to aid the poorest of the poor, and Discovery Bible Studies of the Old Testament – to show the
need for grace/Jesus. Goal: Plant/start 100 churches in refugee areas in two years!

 “We believe that God loves these people and His heart is broken by their persecution.”
Pastor’s Message – (Genesis 4:8-16)

 Cain’s mark (v. 15) was a “mark of grace” – a foreshadowing of the blood on the doors at
Passover, of Israel’s Cities of Refuge, and of the Ultimate Grace earned for us by Jesus Christ.

1. The World is Not Right

 When tragedy occurs, we want to make it right – and make the world right again – but we can’t.

 Christianity doesn’t pretend that everything is good – we know that true peace and justice
aren’t achievable in our fallen world. But we know the One who is good…

2. Christ is our Refuge

 In a lost, broken and evil world our only real refuge is in Christ. His wounds (“stripes”), suffered
for us, are the ultimate “marks of grace.” (Isaiah 53:5 KJV)

 Our support of missions and missionaries is all about taking the message of Ultimate Grace to
the outcasts – the poor, the afflicted, the refugees – in the dirty, dark, desperate and dangerous
places of the world.

 Ultimately we are all refugees – and the grace of Jesus Christ is our only refuge.

Opening – Exodus 12:1-7; Numbers 35:9-15
Point #1 – Genesis 6:11-12; Ephesians 6:10-12
Point #2 – 2 Samuel 22:1-7; Psalms 46:1; Matthew 11:28; Galatians 1:3-5; 1 John 5:1-5

1. Thinking of the Paris attacks last week, what is your usual response when large-scale tragedies/disasters occur in the world? Are you more inclined to “run in” or “turn away?”

2. As we look around the world at poverty, war, suffering and evil, it’s clear that, in fact, “The World is
Not Right.” How would you explain the reason for that to someone who is not yet a follower of

3. In what ways are we ALL refugees? Refugees from what?

4. Our missionary guest, Ken, stated during his interview time with Pastor Ben that the one thing he
would like American Christians to understand [in light of the terror campaign of ISIS] is that “we are
in an ideological war, and we need to act like it – with sacrifice, prayer, and a radical commitment
to spreading the Gospel. The terrorists need to get saved!” How do you respond to that position?
Would you be willing to pray (sincerely) for the salvation of ISIS terrorists? If not, why not?

5. Another question that Pastor Ben asked Ken was “what is the role of humanitarian work in
spreading the Gospel?” How would you answer that question?

6. Read Matthew 9:35-38 (the passage cited by Ken as the inspiration for his and his wife’s work).
Who are today’s “confused and helpless crowds” in need of “harvest workers?” What should our
response to them be?
