Deep Six Study and Daily Devotional

Every preacher's dream is to see the truth he preaches lived out in the lives of those he preaches to and certainly this is as it should be. This dream is rooted in our Heavenly Father's desire that there would never be unlived truth in the lives of His people. Our church is dedicated to the purpose of helping people Live Fully, and one way we do that is to encourage a deeper study of the truth they hear on Sundays throughout the other six days of the week.  Accordingly, each week we provide (1) the Deep Six Study and (2) the Daily Devotional.

(1) Deep Six Study - accessed via "Discussion Notes" button located under the video message on the "Watch" page of the website. Printed copies also available at the Connect Desk in the church lobby. Note: the Deep Six Study is being done by Tom Main starting this week and is posted below.

(2) Daily Devotional - The Devotionals are done by Ken Hart and are available online Monday through Saturday on a daily basis, accessed via the "Daily Devotional" button at the bottom of the "Watch" page ( The devotions build on and expand from the Sunday message. It is our desire, our hope, and our prayer for this devotional section to be a useful Spiritual Life tool that our church family can benefit from throughout the year. Each day's devotional will typically consist of Scripture connected with the message, a commentary, and a prayer response. We trust the Daily Devotional will assist you as you seek to live out the truth of God's word on a daily basis.

Common Sense Academy – “Wisdom Rules”

Opening (Proverbs 4:7 and 1:1-4)

 We all know that “common sense” isn’t really all that common. However, one
ancient book (Proverbs) more than any other offers useful wisdom for living,
relationships, work and success.
 One of the best request-prayers (supplications) you can pray is “God, give me
 The purpose of the Proverbs is to teach people to live disciplined and successful

Point #1 – The Key to Wisdom is Humility (Proverbs 1:5-7)

 Many people struggle with the notion of “the fear of the LORD,” mostly because it
means that we have to admit that He’s God, and we’re NOT.
 If we’re honest with ourselves, we don’t really want a god who’s dangerous
 Tim Keller: “If your god never disagrees with you, you may be worshipping
 “I know what’s best” almost always leads to sin; your heart is your enemy.

Point #2 – Wisdom is Learned (Proverbs 1:8-10)

 Wisdom comes through experience – it is “caught, then taught.”
 Parents are the most influential sources of wisdom in the lives of their children.
 Parents aren’t the only voices speaking into their children’s lives, though…the
world is full of “voices” telling us/them how to live, and how to “get ahead.”

Point #3 – Wisdom is Common…but Rare (Proverbs 1:20-25, 33; James 1:5)

 The enemy of wisdom is not ignorance – it’s insolence (i.e., it’s not the we don’t
know, it’s that we don’t want to know).
 Wisdom is common (like diamonds…); it’s “shouting in the streets”; but you have
to go get it (dig for it).
 You “dig” by asking for it. And you have to be humble to ask.

Opening – Psalm 111:2-3, 7-10; Job 12:3; Proverbs 2:6
Point #1 – 1 Peter 5:5-6; James 4:6-7, 10; Daniel 2:20; Jeremiah 10:12
Point #2 – 2 Timothy 3:14-17; Philippians 3:17-21; Proverbs 28:26
Point #3 – Proverbs 9:9-10; Romans 11:33-36; Ecclesiastes 7:25

1. Proverbs repeatedly (1:7, 1:29, 2:5, etc) cites “the fear of the LORD” as the
foundation of knowledge. What does “the fear of the LORD” mean, in your own

2. Do you struggle, or have you struggled in the past, with the concept of “fearing”
God? Explain your concerns and how you got beyond them.

3. Were your parents “the most influential sources of wisdom” in your life? Why or why
not? If not, who was/is?

4. Proverbs 1:22 describes three types of people in the world who are “anti-wisdom” –
the naïve, “scoffers” and “fools.” What’s the difference in the three types? Is any
one of them more prevalent in today’s world? What does that mean for children
trying to gain wisdom?

5. Read James 1:5. Do you really believe that God’s wisdom is there for the asking?
Have you had a trial or test in your life during which you asked for and received the
wisdom you needed from God?

6. As Pastor Ben asked in closing, where is it in your life right now that you need
wisdom? If you can, share that need with your group or study partner and pray for
each other’s wisdom needs.
