But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.” And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife. Matthew 1:20-24
Forever, O LORD, Your word is settled in heaven …. The sum of Your word is truth, and every one of Your righteous ordinances is everlasting. Psalm 119:89, 160
For you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. For, “All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls off, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word which was preached to you. 1 Peter 1:23-25
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away. Matthew 24:35
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
Our faith is a reasonable faith, but the bottom line is not what is reasonable, but what is revealed. Christianity is a revealed faith and while always reasonable in the end, it may not always seem reasonable to us. If you had been Joseph what would your thoughts have been if an angel told you that the only explanation previously known to all of mankind for Mary being pregnant was not the case and that it was actually the result of the Holy Spirit. You would not have thought it to be a reasonable explanation. Would we have believed anyway and responded as instructed? In regard to the Scriptures, how easy it is for us to believe what seems reasonable and to set aside what does not seem reasonable. Joseph believed and did exactly as he had been commanded by the angel of Lord. When we have a Bible in our hands, we have the eternal, flawless, and living word of God in our hands and we must be careful to believe and be obedient to it in its entirety. If we find the Scriptures to be beyond reason in places, trust God for it. He will either make them clearer further along in our lives or someday in glory we will see how wonderfully reasonable the revealed word of God truly is at every point.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, thank you for revealing truth to us. What a treasure it is to have your Word in our hands. Help me to be like Joseph in how I respond to what you make known to me. Forgive me for all the times I set aside something from your Word because I was trusting more in my own reasonable thinking than in your revealed truth. What an amazing thing the supernatural birth of Jesus is. A baby in Mary’s womb conceived by the Holy Spirit is not reasonable. Nor is God in the flesh reasonable. It is amazing; it is revealed; it is the gift of grace poured out. Hallelujah! Amen!
