The Life of Christ - John Tells of Christ and His Holy Spirit Gift - Wednesday, January 10th

(Starting this week and on through Easter our Devotionals will come from the Gospel of Mark and will be coordinated with Pastor Ben’s series on the Life of Christ from the Gospel of Mark)

And he was preaching, and saying, “After me One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” Mark 1:7-8

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

Out of a heart of compassion God sent His Son, Jesus, to maximize both the number of people who would become properly aligned with him and the quality of life that would come from being properly aligned with him. Since the moment in history when Jesus arrived on the scene His impact in this regard has been staggering and it all centers on John the Baptist’s pronouncement, “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” This provision is the centerpiece of God’s plan for fixing this broken world. Jesus takes up residence in our hearts through the gift of His Spirit. Our living Savior forever becomes to us the source of “newness of life” as He dwells within us, accomplishing in us and through us that which otherwise would never come about no matter how hard we might try to live up to the standards Christ alone lived by and fulfilled. Truly and surely, we learn to let it be that the life we live is His doing.

There is another pronouncement of John the Baptist that helped prepare the way of the Lord. While not recorded in the gospel of Mark, it is recorded in the gospel of John, where it says, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Christ’s crucifixion, death, and resurrection provide forgiveness of sins. Forgiveness of sins makes us a suitable residence for the Holy Spirit of God. At the moment we believe in Jesus Christ as our Savior we receive the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. This the heart of how God intervenes and fixes this world one person at a time.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, awaken me to the Holy Spirit who lives within the depths of my soul. Help me to grasp what that means and to envision the amazing difference you can make in my life as a result. Keep me from facing life without a full awareness of the Spirit’s presence and his power at my disposal. Help me actually to live in the power of the Holy Spirit in the face of the challenge of living life the way it should be lived. Thanks for being alive and well in my soul and making it possible for me to walk in newness of life! Amen!
