"The Mind of Christ & Diligence" - Thursday, July 21st
Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let us therefore, as many as are spiritually mature, have this attitude; and if in anything you have a different attitude, God will reveal that also to you. Philippians 3:13B-15
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
Our focus this week is on what it means to have the “Mind of Christ.” We are using the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Philippians to help us with this. In today’s Scripture the Apostle Paul says, “I press on.” This conveys the idea of being diligent. Being a “diligent” person is important, but what we are diligent for makes all the difference in what kind of life we live. Let’s use the word “horizontal” to represent “earth” and the word “vertical” to represent “heaven.” For some life is all about the “horizontal.” The “horizontal is what they are “diligent” about. Their lives never seem to intersect with the “vertical.” Today’s passage shows us how the horizontal and vertical should intersect properly. We see that the Apostle Paul reaches forward (horizontal) but that as he does he is heavily under the influence of the upward (vertical) call of God in Christ Jesus.
There we have it: live life on the “horizontal” level while heavily under the influence of the “vertical” level. We must live our lives here on earth with or feet firmly on the ground but always with an upward trajectory toward heaven. Those who live this way are the “spiritually mature” people the Apostle Paul speaks of in our passage. They have the “Mind (attitude) of Christ” and are heavily under the influence of his upward call. Because of Christ’s upward call, they are able to forget the past and reach forward to what lies ahead for them here on earth. The “Mind of Christ” has allowed the “horizontal” and “vertical” to intersect properly in their lives and now they diligently go forward in the mission of impacting whatever lies ahead for them here on earth with the reality of heaven.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, reveal to me the true, overall attitude I have regarding how I live my life. Help me have the “Mind of Christ.” I want to hear and experience your “upward” call in my life. Deliver me from living too much on the horizontal level. Use my life to impact my world for the kingdom of heaven. Lord, I choose to press on diligently with you for that which truly counts and makes a difference. Amen!
