"The Protection of God's Goodness" - Thursday, September 15th
How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you. You lavish it on those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world! Psalm 31:19
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
We are talking this week about the spiritual protection that comes to us from God to help ensure our spiritual welfare. We have been looking at spiritual things that come to us from the fullness of who God is and how they form the basis of the spiritual protection he provides. We saw yesterday that the “evil one” works to undermine our “spiritual welfare.” He uses the physical world we live in to influence us in ways that trip us up and cause us to value “physical welfare” over “spiritual welfare.”
God uses the bad things that come into our lives to bring about our spiritual welfare. However, we are more oriented to the how bad things mess up our physical welfare than we are to how they help our spiritual welfare. Hence, their presence in our lives, their effect on our physical welfare, and God seemingly not intervening, all lead us to doubt him. The protection of God’s goodness is the perfect antidote. Today’s Scripture reminds us that God’s goodness is great.
When our concern for our physical welfare overshadows our concern for our spiritual welfare we will be overwhelmed when we are in the middle of contending with something bad in our lives. Our struggle will always be hinged to our doubting God. We doubt God because we fail to properly connect bad things with God’s goodness. Our passage makes a very direct connection between our being oriented to God’s goodness and our fearing him.
Those who fear God are those who recognize that God is God and they are not. They are those who truly know that God is in charge and adjust their lives accordingly. They are those who give God the center place in their lives. God’s stores up his great goodness for these people and he lavishes it upon them when they come to him for protection. So, when you come to God for protection (physical or spiritual) and you truly fear him, he will be free to fill you with an amazing sense of his goodness.
The power of God’s goodness will transform you and help you transcend the power of bad things. You will be set free from the deception of the evil one that causes you to believe the lie that bad things in our lives are the evidence that God is not good. Instead you will be free to experience God’s goodness in the middle of what you are going through because you will see how God is using the bad thing for your spiritual welfare. Remember, our spiritual welfare always trumps our physical welfare. Experiencing God’s goodness in this way protects us and is always a blessing and never a curse. A watching world cannot help but be moved toward God when they observe him blessing us as we trust in him and his goodness when bad things come our way.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, I know you are God and I am not. I know you are in charge and I am not. I know the center place in my life belongs to you and not me. And yet, all this needs to be more real and actual in my life. Forgive me for doubting your goodness. Help me to become one who truly fears you and enters more fully into the protection of your abundant goodness. I choose to trust you and to rest in your goodness when bad things come. Amen!
