If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man. As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. John 3:12-17
Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned …. But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many …. So that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:12, 15, 21
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
Today’s Scriptures convey to us some wonderful images. Jesus descended from heaven so that we can ascend to heaven. Jesus was lifted up on the cross so that we could be lifted up to heaven. Sin and death entered the world through one man, Adam. One man, Jesus Christ entered the world to provide righteousness and eternal life. Sin and death spread to all men. The grace of God abounds to the many. Sin reigned in death. Grace reigns through Jesus Christ our Lord. The provision of heaven because of the provision of Christ is both beautiful and amazing.
In our first passage we are told that God “gave” his son. In our second passage we are told that eternal life through Christ is a “gift.” These beautiful words, “gave” and “gift” are words of provision and grace. All that was provided in our Heavenly Father’s “giving” of his Son was for all but comes only to “whoever believes.” Sin and death spread to all and the gift of grace was provided for all but eternal life comes only to those who receive the gift. A gift does not benefit the person the gift is given to unless that person receives the gift as a personal possession. The provision of Heaven is God’s gift to us through Jesus Christ. We acquire the gift of Heaven provided by our Heavenly Father by believing in His Son, Jesus Christ. “Whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, thank you for providing Heaven as a free gift. Thank you, Jesus, for being lifted up on the cross for me so that I will be lifted up to Heaven someday. I know I am forgiven forever and will not perish. Eternal life and the provision of Heaven are mine through Jesus Christ my Savior and Lord. I give you my love, worship, and devotion, Lord. Amen!
