The Role of Money in Life – Shifting Our Reliance to God - Monday, January 7th
Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?” Hebrews 13:5-6 (NASB)
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
Tackling and managing the pressure points of life is quite a challenge. We are all too aware of those areas of life that are ongoing, constant, and could stand some improvement in the new year. These pressure points nag at us and there is a very real tension that comes from them. No where is this more true than in this week’s area of consideration: “Money.”
Today’s Scripture is a great place to begin our considerations for the week. Our passage leads us to ask some important questions. What kind of grip does money have on my soul? What is my true source of contentment? Do I rely more on money than I do on God? Our passage quotes some direct statements of God found elsewhere in Scripture. In the portion that follows we have taken these quotes and substituted “money” for “God” and turned it into a hypothetical guarantee.
“Money will never desert you, nor will it ever forsake you,” so that we confidently say, “Money is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?” There is an appeal in this, but it is a dangerous appeal. We need to do some soul searching so that we can discover what inroads money has made into our hearts and lives. We may discover that there are some very real ways that “money” has become a substitute for “God” in our actual experience of living life.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, money really is a pressure point for me and the tension in my life because of it is very real to me. Deliver me from having a desire for a “money” guarantee and help me believe that your guarantee concerning yourself is absolutely certain. I choose to love you and not money. I trust you for all the pressure and tension in my life because of money. You alone are God in my life and I worship and rest in you today. Amen!
