The Upward Call of God - Battling the Spirit of this World - Monday, March 13th

Later she gave birth to a second son and named him Abel. At harvest time Cain brought to the Lord a gift of his farm produce, while Abel brought several choice lambs from the best of his flock. The Lord accepted Abel and his offering, but he did not accept Cain and his offering. This made Cain very and angry and dejected. Genesis 4:2-5

You have heard that the ancients were told, “You shall not commit murder” and “Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.” But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, “You good for nothing,” shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, “You fool,” shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell. Matthew 5:21-22

Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain. Jude 1:11

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

The apostle Paul, speaking for himself and his ministry companions, says in 1 Corinthians 2, “Yet we do speak wisdom … a wisdom, however not of this age … we speak God’s wisdom … a wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” What a paradox. God gave His Son to deliver mankind from the “way of Cain” and the “way of Cain” was instrumental in bringing about Christ’s crucifixion which in turn is God’s means of conquering the “way of Cain.” It was anger and rage that led to Cain murdering his brother Abel. It was the anger and rage that led to the rulers of this age crucifying Jesus. This is the spirit of the world; the spirit of anger and rage. Jesus said, that our anger and rage toward another person constitutes murder. Paul says further on in 1 Corinthians 2, “Now we have received, not the spirit of this world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God … But a natural man does not accept the things of God, for they are foolishness to him.” Anger and rage are natural. As Christians, we are no longer to live naturally according to the spirit of this world and yet we do and of course we all know how troublesome the presence and power of anger and rage in our lives really are. However, the problem is greater than we think and runs deeper than we know. The provision of God’s wisdom and God’s Spirit point strongly to God’s desire for us to be delivered from anger and rage and such deliverance is the focus of this week’s Devotional.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, how readily I live in ways that come naturally. Forgive me for the unchecked anger and rage in my life. I know you have given me the Holy Spirit, Lord. You have freely given me everything I need to battle the spirit of the world and win. Help me truly live supernaturally so that anger and rage are conquered. Thank you for your upward call. Amen!
