When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. Romans 5:6-8
This series is about the fruit "of" the Holy Spirit not the fruit "of" any of us. The words "utterly helpless" from our Romans passage speak to this. For salvation to take place we have to step aside and let God do the work of saving us because we are "utterly helpless" to do anything about it that is of any value. Similarly, we are "utterly helpless" to do anything that is of any value in regard to having a truly fruitful life. In order for the Holy Spirit to work we must step aside. How easily we get in the way of the Holy Spirit and the work he seeks to do in and through us. For the Holy Spirit to have the room needed for filling us up with himself, we must be empty of self.
Lord, show me how I get in the way. Convince me that I am "utterly helpless." Show me how to come to the end of myself so the fullness of the Spirit truly takes place. I bow before you in worship and surrender. Amen!
