True Greatness - Fruitfulness and Dying to Self - Monday, October 16th
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. He who loves his life loses it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it to life eternal. If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him. John 12:24-26
Today's thoughts from today's verses:
We can speak of many things that we are saved from because of God’s gift of salvation to us, but of paramount importance is being saved from fruitlessness. Our focus this week is on true greatness. Being fruitful is what true greatness is all about. Fruitfulness lies at the heart of the difference Jesus came to make. Do we really believe we have been saved from fruitlessness because of Jesus Christ? Do we really understand the process that is necessary for this to happen? The analogy of the seed (grain of wheat) offers to us some rather remarkable and helpful insight into this.
If a seed stays a seed there will be no fruit. But when it dies to being a seed, fruitfulness is unleashed. Just like the seed, we must die so we can become fruitful. We die to our claim on our own life. We die to what the world says is a fruitful life. We die to self and all its entanglements and then we surrender to Christ and His claim on our life. We become alive to what Christ says is a fruitful life. We welcome the work of Christ in us and through us by the power of the Holy Spirit. We live in the realm of Christ’s presence and we become fruitful. The result is a great life because of the greatness of Christ being unleashed within us.
Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:
Lord, it seems like for so many of us as Christians our approach to fruitfulness is akin to hanging fruit in the barren branches of a tree. I suspect this has far too often been the case for me. I want the great life you want for me where genuine spiritual fruit is produced in my life. So, like a seed, I choose dying to self and becoming alive to you and the spiritual fruit you want to produce in my life. Unleash yourself in me fully and completely. Amen!
