Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord. Ephesians 6:4

The prudent sees the evil and hides himself, but the naive go on, and are punished for it. The reward of humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, honor and life. Thorns and snares are in the way of the perverse; he who guards himself will be far from them. Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:3-6

To discipline a child produces wisdom, but a mother is disgraced by an undisciplined child. Proverbs 29:15

No matter how we analyze it, strategize it, or disguise it, in the end life is all about the Lord. If we want life to work then we must be wrapped up in the ways of God, the presence of God, and the movements of God (what He is actually doing in the present). Life is all about Him and our being in an intimate love relationship with Him. God is our goal. If you want to know His ways thoroughly you must be a student of His Word, one who devours the Scriptures. If you want to know Him thoroughly you must be a person of prayer, one who seeks the Lord day and night. If you want to be one who knows His movements you must be a person who stops, looks, and listens at every turn for the imprint of His touch and the sound of His voice in your everyday world. When God is our goal, God will use us to help our children in turn embrace God as their goal. There are no short cuts, quick fixes, or prepackaged plans from spiritual experts than can or should be able to accomplish this for us.

Parents and parents alone are ultimately responsible for raising their children. Our schools, churches, relatives, friends, experts, good DVD’s, recordings, books, music, etc. can and should only be supplementary and supportive to us as we fulfill our role as parents. We must not abdicate our role to anyone or anything. We must learn how to fulfill our role as parents and truly become the primary influence in our children’s lives. Understanding that our role is first and foremost a relational role whereby in the context of day to day living with our children they catch from us a godly and righteous lifestyle is essential. Unfortunately, our children often spend significant amounts of time in other spheres of life where they catch that which is far from being godly and righteous. This problem can spiral out of control when our children’s involvement and time spent with their peers, TV, computers, phones, ipods, etc. overshadow the time and involvement parents and other godly and righteous influences have with them.

Someone has said that it is better to build children rather than repair adults. We must be proactive by always being willing, ready and determined to stick with the task of doing whatever it takes to raise our children for the Lord.

Lord we come before you, needing you, loving you, and worshiping you. We recognize and embrace what it means for us to be responsible parents, but we release the burden and weight of that responsibility to you. We ask that you renew us in our surrender to you and in our depenence upon you. We realize that it is the reality of our own love relationship with you that you will use more than anything else in the lives of our children.
