Tuesday, December 29th

With eyes wide open to the mercies of God, I beg you, my brothers, as an act of intelligent worship, to give him your bodies, as a living sacrifice, consecrated to him and acceptable by him. Don’t let the world around you squeeze you into its own mold, but let God re-mold your minds from within, so that you may prove in practice that the plan of God for you is good, meets all his demands and moves towards the goal of true maturity. Romans 12:1-2 (PHILLIPS)

Today's thoughts from today's verses:

Today's Scripture stands in contrast to yesterday's Scripture. It is as simple as this: what do we let ourselves be embraced by? Are we in the embrace of the mercies of God or are we in the embrace of the enticements of the world? When we are in the tight embrace of the mercies of God, he squeezes (gently) us into the mold of what is acceptable to him. When we are in the tight embrace of the enticements of this world, we are squeezed into the mold of worldliness (that which is not acceptable to God). The mercies of God involve the spiritual provision he has made for us through Jesus Christ. We have been given eternal salvation, the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, and God's commitment to continually help us become ones who live fully for him.

It all comes down to what we pay attention to, what we get wrapped up in, what we give ourselves to, and what we live for. Being in the tight embrace of the mercies of God means that we pay attention to God, we are wrapped up in him, we give ourselves to him, and we live for him. Being in the tight embrace of the enticements of this world means that we pay attention to the enticements of this world, we are wrapped up in them, we give ourselves to them, and we live for them. The admonition of today's Scripture is this: "Don't let the world" have its way with you. Let God have his way with you instead. Paying attention to God means that we prayerfully seek him and learn how to be in his presence for sweet times of communion. Paying attention to God means that we take his Word (the Scriptures) into our minds and hearts day in and day out. As we involve ourselves with God in this way, we will become wrapped up in him and will become ones who truly live fully for him.

Today's prayer response from today's thoughts:

Lord, show me more fully what is acceptable to you and what is not. Help me to seek you with all my heart, soul, and mind. Enable me to wrapped up in you and enjoy the tender embrace of your love and mercy more than ever before. Lord, deliver me from the terrible embrace of the world upon my life and bring healing to all the squeezing damage it has done to me. Show me the path of victory for the new year and put me squarely on it.
