You have heard me teach things that have been confirmed by many reliable witnesses. Now teach these truths to other trustworthy people who will be able to pass them on to others. 2 Timothy 2:2

There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. 1 Corinthians 12:4-7

Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. 1 Corinthians 12:20-22

Coaching tip # 1 is: Join the team. This is the 1st of 5 coaching tips the Apostle Paul gave Timothy that will help us be strong and compete well in the game of life (for a fuller context review Monday's devotional). There is a progression of influence in 2 Timothy 2:2 that is instructive. The Apostle Paul was reached directly be Jesus Christ (Acts 9). Paul is used by Jesus to reach Timothy. Paul instructs Timothy to let Jesus use him to reach other trustworthy people. These trustworthy people then let Jesus use them to reach others. For us it boils down to those people Jesus used to reach us. Our being used by Jesus to reach others Then the others Jesus used us to reach being used as well by Jesus to reach additional others. We call this progression Discipleship. It is like a chain and every link is essential.

With the 1 Corinthians 12 passages above let's add the analogy of a team. Verses 4-7 make it very clear that God uses everyone of us on the team. God has gifted you to contribute to the team. The team needs you to join the team in full participation. You must not be a missing link or the Discipleship chain will be broken. While the team needs you, it is also true that you need everyone on the team. Verses 20-22 make it very clear that those we think are the weakest on the team and are not needed by us are often the most necessary to the team.

Lord, help us to keep clearly in view that you are at working accomplishing your mission of reaching the world through your people (Make Disciples of all nations, Matthew 28:18-20). Help us to also keep clearly in view that our relationship with you is always more about you making us strong for doing our part in the mission of Discipleship than for all the other aspects of our lives. Teach us what it means to be on your team. Give us a full understanding of our role and give us a full appreciation of the roles of everyone else on our team.
