Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne?  But even if that were possible, I would not forget you!  16 See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands... Isaiah 49:15-16

Only the living can praise you as I do today. Each generation tells of your faithfulness to the next. Isaiah 38:19

A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. Luke 6:40

Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close. Psalm 27:10

How often as parents we get caught up in the notion that giving our children the best of everything is the all important pursuit. However, what really counts is giving our children “ourselves.” This is what love is all about. When we love our children by giving "ourselves" to them in the midst of our pursuit of a godly lifestyle it makes all the difference. As our children’s lives are intertwined with our lives, our relationship with God becomes a training ground for them. Our children “catch” from us a lifestyle of right living, supplemented by explanations of Biblical teachings and understandings in all areas of life (Isaiah 38 verse above). The priority of “relationship” keeps us on track with being parents who are truly model parents.

In our relationship with our children if they are exposed regularly and consistently to our pursuit of right living in our relationship with God, they will have the opportunity to become like us in this area (Luke verse above). The following example shows in practical terms what is being said theoretically: Picture a father and son who have gotten up at 4 am to observe a meteor shower. They go to a place void of manmade lighting out under a sky thick with stars. Gazing together at the majestic expanse of God’s universe they witness a heavenly light show miraculously unfolding before them. Afterwards, in spontaneous response to God and His creative splendor, the man kneels with hands raised toward Heaven. With his son following his example, the man gives glory to God in a prayer of worship and praise. “The heavens are telling of the glory of God; and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands” - Psalm 19:1.

The Isaiah 49 passage and the Psalm verse above both pose the idea of parents being out of the picture but the Lord always being there. In as sense this is what needs to happen to a certain degree eventually. The relationship of parents and their kids should lead to them having their own never ending love relationship with God that gives them the foundation for living a truly godly life.

Lord, thank you for your great plan and the priviledge of being a part of it. You are a gracious and redeeming God who marvelously makes up the difference wherever our own growing up and parenting experiences fall short. Grant us the confidence that you will powerfully help us go forward in ways that line up beautifully with your desires for us and our children.
