For the love of Christ controls us, having concluded this, that one died for all, therefore all died; and He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf. Therefore, from now on we recognize no one according to the flesh; even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him in this way no longer. 2 Corinthians 5:14-16
Today’s thoughts from today’s verses:
Today’s Scripture begins with the all-important words, “For the love of Christ controls us.” A consideration of these words requires that we sort out who is loving who. “Love of Christ” can be understood as “our” love of Christ or the love of Christ that comes from him to us. It is both and yet it is not both. It is both in that the experience of our relationship with Christ involves both his loving us and our loving him. It is just one of the two in that one is contained in the other. When the sun shines the stars disappear. If for a moment we truly experienced Christ loving us (not merely just enjoying the fact that he loves us), we would be so overwhelmed by his love (the love of Christ controls) that we would have a love for him that would strip away all our self-absorption and petty preoccupation with so many things that matter so very little.
When we get to this spot, these words from our passage will become true of us: “He died for all, so that they who live might no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died and rose again on their behalf.” When Christ and his love flood our souls, we can no longer live for ourselves. We are so liberated by the love of Christ that we love him, and him alone; and all other things in and for him. What an amazing thing it is to be liberated by the love of Christ and then to be controlled by love of Christ.
Today’s prayer response from today’s thoughts:
Lord, I know I am in a love relationship with you but I confess that I avail myself so little of the experience of your love. Show me how to come before you so that I am truly with you in a real and powerful way. Certainly, I want the experience of love, but more importantly I want to be set free to live fully for you and I see now that it all flows from being wrapped up in your love moment by moment. Amen!
