Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 3:17-18
Today’s thoughts from today’s verses:
We know that Christ lives within us through the Holy Spirit and that he is manifested to us in the personal experience of looking into his face. Today’s Scripture speaks of “beholding the glory of the Lord” which is the same thing as seeing the face of Christ. Seeing the face of Christ is the spiritual awareness that we are in his presence. When we are prayerfully aware of the presence of Christ we are in communion with him and beholding the face of Christ becomes an intimate personal experience of being with him and worshiping him. Our passage shows us what happens when we regularly behold the face of Christ. It says that we “are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord.” Beholding “the face of Christ” results in our being transformed into “the image of Christ.”
To put it more simply: the more we spend time in Christ’s presence the more he rubs off on us and the more he rubs off on us the more we become like him through the special inner working of the Holy Spirit. But what will we look like when this inner working of the Holy Spirit to make us like Christ takes place? We can hardly do better than Galatians 5:22-23 for a clear and practical description: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” What a beautiful thing it is to be freed from trying to be like Christ (law keeping) in favor of just learning to spend time in his presence and letting the Holy Spirit do the work of changing us into “the image of Christ.” Our passage says, “where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
Today’s prayer response from today’s thoughts:
Lord, here I am just seeking your face and believing I am in your presence. You are beautiful and wonderful beyond description. I love you, I worship you, I glorify you, I praise you, I adore you. I trust you, I rest in you, I am free in you, I abide in you. Lord, I yield my life to you and all the wonderful changes you want to make in me. I am truly blessed. Amen!
