Family Tech Guide

BACK-TO-SCHOOL RESOURCE

In a rapidly changing world, we could all use a little help. Check out this helpful guide, developed by our Family Ministry team for the modern parent!

How do I navigate technology
with my child?

1. Play the long game. Technology changes rapidly and so do the dangers. Helping our children see the benefits and dangers of technology is something that takes time, communication, and consistency over time.

2. Keep technology battles in perspective. Winning a minor battle isn’t worth destroying the relationship or your opportunity to be an influence in your child’s life.

3. Be aware. Times have changed; so, define the role technology plays in your and your child’s life.

4. Ask good questions. Timing, tone, and wording make a difference in how your children feel and then respond (open up) to you. Good conversations lead to good information.

5. Educate yourself. Learn what things they (and their peers) are interested in. You will build influence when you first learn more about your child’s world and how technology is used in it.

Ideas for next steps.

HERE'S A FEW TO GET YOU STARTED:
  • Take inventory of your child's devices, and consider inventorying all passwords.
  • Create custom screen time schedules.
  • Consider not allowing devices in the bedroom at night.
  • Monitor online activites. Put parental controls and content blockers in place.
  • Decide what tech parameters you want to set up for your children, and then practice them as a family!
